Gasoline consumption in US still at record low levels

This result must be due to a combination of reduced driving and more fuel-efficient vehicles.  It’s remarkable how much lower June 2010 deliveries are versus June 2009.

Here is a chart from the US Energy Information Administration that shows the full history of this metric:

The low levels of consumption in the early 1980’s were likely due to the severe recession at that time.  Between then and the current downturn, it looks like consumption stayed within a level range.  That must be largely attributable to increased fuel efficiency of the vehicle stock.
