German demographics

A piece by Deutsche Welle from a couple of years ago argues that economic, cultural and legal issues are significant factors in continuing low birth rates.  It doesn’t really address the social attitudes that drive child avoidance in German culture today.  It would seem the PR campaigns in the mid 20th century regarding “population explosion” and the Green agenda have been very successful in Germany. At reunification, the population in the former East German areas amounted to one fifth of the total German population.  The attitudes of this portion of the population would likely be somewhat different, even now.
